The tuneworks studio came to life this week with the addition of some RME gear the studio is now capable of  8 in and 2 out in our  5 x 3 meter  room should be enough for tracking small  live bands. We have some new microphones coming in too. I cant wait to start tracking some music.

How Tuneworks playlist promotion works

Tuneworks offers an iTunes promotion service using material already at the iTunes stores. These screenshots will help to make it clearer.  The first screenshot  is an album by Grace Bawden  a client I have been working with. On the lower left is Grace’s top rated playlists box ( this is where I do my promotion) the top rated playlist is called  Tuneworks 41. Next screen is Tuneworks 41 opened to show the full list you can play and buy all the tracks or buy the whole list. First song on the Tuneworks 41 list is from The Beatles 1 Album. Next screen is the Beatles 1 album page and the top rated playlist is Tuneworks 41. So iTunes customers who are on The Beatles 1 album page ( or any other album on the Tuneworks 41 playlist) are 1 click away from a page where they can hear and buy my clients music.

December / Holiday /Christmas Songs

Tuneworks ran campaigns over December/Christmas  for two artists. Campaigns were focused on  Christmas songs from the album Ho Ho by Etypejazz Away In a Manger Image and 3 tracks from Beggars Deluxe by The Beggars Silent Night Imageboth artists saw increased sales and achieved multiple iTunes chart entries throughout December. Click on the Ho Ho or Beggars Deluxe album art in the line above to see the charts. The reason so many  big name artists have a Christmas album is because they sell well an of course the same stratagy can work for indie artists.

Getting your music selling at iTunes.

It has never been easier for artists to sell their own  music that it is right now.  You can put your tracks  at iTunes and all the other digital download services through an aggregator. We recommend Tunecore they are good value and very helpful. When your tracks are in the stores we can make it easy for customers to find them.

This screen shot is an iTunes page for The Beggars. At the bottom of the page you  can see the Top-Rated Playlists  and  The Listeners Also Bought functions both of these are links that help iTunes customers looking for new music to find this artist. In the upper right corner is the search with the artists name partly entered and a drop down list of matches. The more sales the artist makes the higher their name  appears in the list.

Repackaging to increase sales

Packaging the same songs into more than one release is a great way to increase sales. You can find lots of examples in the top 200 album list with some big selling artists new releases  available in 4 versions across two price points  i.e. standard edition [Clean] Standard [Explicit] both $11.99 and Deluxe with bonus tracks [{clean] and Deluxe with bonus tracks [Explicit] both $14.99 .

Repackaging does not just apply to new releases. Recently we  doubled an artists sales figures by repackaging and promoting their 4 previous releases repackaged into one Super Value Album.  Sales of the already released songs have not suffered. The already released albums and 4 track EP are priced at $9.99 and $2.99 and the new 50track Super Value Album is priced at $11.99. This is bringing slightly higher album sales but as always iTunes sales are mainly single tracks which are  $0.99. [all prices $U.S.]

Client “D” is an independent Australian Singer/Songwriter with four albums already released at iTunes. The release date was 28 May 2011 and this weekly chart starts second week of June when Tuneworks started promoting.

Client “A” Sales to December

We just got sales figures for the December quarter  for one of our first clients. Client “A” is an independent Australian singer songwriter: Tune Works promoted tracks from two albums [with 2006 & 2009 release dates ] starting in July 2010 focusing firstly on USA and then adding the other primary markets . In the September Client”A” released a new 4 track album and Tuneworks worked on two of the new tracks. Its interesting to note that  the USA is accounting for around 50% of sales and that over two quarters monthly sales have increased by a factor of 50X. Chart shows sales at iTunes by month, counts album and single sales equally and is based on figures supplied by MGM.
