iTunes go wrong – help them to get it right!

I think Apple have taken a wrong turn with the new iTunes 11 update by removing some key features.  Most concerning for this this writer is the removal of the user generated iMix ecosystem.  I am asking iTunes to bring back the iMix and I encourage you to do the same at their feedback page

I believe honest word of mouth  is the best recommendation and the iMix ecosystem contains plenty.  There are over zealous self promoters and fanatical fans in there  too but at least the content its real opinion and generated by real people.  Which is far better that the beefed “Listeners Also Bought” box which just looks like machine generated advertising to me.

These are powerful links for directing returning iTunes customers to specific tracks. For example in you have a high view youtube clip for your song and post the link right under the video. Returning iTunes customers who click the link will open iTunes displaying your song and its buy button.  They can buy in two clicks.

How to sell CDs

As the digital shock and the resulting shake out of the music industry progresses the CD shop and the associated CD  distribution structures have become obsolete. But there is still a place where the CD reigns supreme and that is as merchandise at the gig. Savvy indie artists are experiencing a growth in their CD sales alongside a growing stream of income from digital sales.

Some tips to maximise CD sales at gigs :

  • The CD purchased at the gig  is a souvenir of the live performance and should reflect that . The art should be specific to the show/tour and thematically tie in with the flyer, press, web and poster art etc.
  • don’t skimp, make it a handsome, pleasing package that can command a premium price.
  • make it a personal representation of the artist who is going to be right there selling it at the merch table. [yes that right you have to sell it yourself]
  • Do include a place to sign the CD when you lay out the art

Some practical tips about manufacture and transport.

  • Don’t over manufacture your stock – Try to  estimate how many units you will sell in 12 months and if that is 500 units then that’s what you need. If you need 500 but order 5,000 units you will be tying up cash for the next 10 years.
  • Reorder when you need more stock.
  • Have the CD manufactured as paper and discs i.e. No cases.
  • When you travel carry your stock as paper and discs. Its lighter, more likely to arrive in good condition and takes up about 10% of the space of discs in jewel cases.
  •  Buy new jewel cases as you need, they are widely available [Pack of 50 jewel cases at Office-works is around $17Au]. New unscratched jewel cases look better that ones you have carried around the country.

A & R Campaign – For artists who have their full album [s] at iTunes and want to promote multiple songs or are just not sure which track is the single. We will promote 3 tracks for $300 per month.

Single Campaign- For artists who are pushing a single. We will promote one track for $150 per month.

Campaigns are charged by the month and our playlists are published every week in Canada, U.K. Germany Japan, Australia and twice a week in the USA. All prices are in Australian dollars.

Labels can attract a discount for multiple A & R or singles Campaigns.

tuneworks studio comes to life

The tuneworks studio came to life this week with the addition of some RME gear the studio is now capable of  8 in and 2 out in our  5 x 3 meter  room should be enough for tracking small  live bands. We have some new microphones coming in too. I cant wait to start tracking some music.
